Sound familiar?

Everyone's using AI. Nobody's sure they're doing it right.

“Half my team uses ChatGPT on their phones. I've no idea what they're putting into it.”
“We pay for Copilot and hardly anyone uses it.”
“The answers sound confident. But are they right?”
“I'd like to try it, but I don't want to look daft in front of the team.”

What does AI training for a small business cover?

Good AI training covers what the tools are good at, where they go wrong, and how to use them on your real work. That means drafting emails, letters, quotes and proposals, summarising documents and meetings, and checking the results. It should also set simple rules on what can and can't be shared.

I learned all this the long way. For years I worked 60 to 70 hours a week, often until 2am. When I stepped back, I spent months learning what AI and automation could do for my own firm. Your team gets the useful parts on their own work, without the months of trial and error.

A typical training plan
SessionWhat your team learns
AI, honestlyWhat these tools do well, where they go wrong, and why they sometimes make things up (so-called hallucinations)
Your everyday tasksDrafting emails, letters, quotes and proposals, and summarising long documents, using your own examples
The tools you pay forGetting real value from ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Claude, inside the software your team already uses
Asking wellHow to write a clear prompt, give the right background and ask for a format you can use
Safe useBusiness accounts rather than personal ones, what can't be pasted in, and checking before anything goes out
Keeping it goingOne or two AI champions who can help the rest of the team after the training

Will AI replace my staff?

That isn't the aim, and the evidence so far is reassuring. The ONS found around half of businesses using AI reported no impact on headcount. Acas research found 26% of workers worry about job losses, so it pays to involve your team early and explain how AI will help them.

The figures come from the ONS report Artificial intelligence in UK businesses: 2023 to 2026 and Acas research from April 2025. Acas also recommends consulting staff before introducing AI. I run a law firm of around 30 people, and in my experience people welcome AI when it takes away the jobs they dislike.

Is ChatGPT safe to use with customer data?

Only with the right account and the right rules. Business versions of ChatGPT, Copilot and Claude offer stronger data protections than free personal accounts, but UK GDPR still applies. Your team needs to know what they can paste in, what they can't, and to check every answer before it goes out.

The ICO's guidance on AI is the authority here, and my training covers the practical side. I'm a practising solicitor, so I'm used to getting the facts straight and keeping confidences. This consultancy gives no legal advice, though, and isn't regulated by the SRA. I'll tell you when you need a lawyer or your data protection adviser, and there's more in my guide: is ChatGPT safe for business?

A simple rule of thumb: if you wouldn't put it in an email to a stranger, don't paste it into a free AI tool.

Free AI courses or in-house training: which is better?

Start with the free ones. The government's AI Skills Hub offers free AI foundations courses to every UK adult, and they're a good grounding. In-house training adds what they can't: your own tasks, your own software, your own rules, and someone in the room to answer your team's questions.

You can read about the free courses in the GOV.UK announcement. I'm happy to suggest which ones suit your team before or after working with me.

Questions people ask

Questions about AI training

Does my team need to be good with computers?

No. If they can write an email, they can learn to use AI well. I go at the pace of the room and nobody gets put on the spot.

Can you train us on Microsoft Copilot?

Yes. If you already pay for Copilot, I'll show your team how to use it in Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams on their own work. If you don't, I'll help you decide whether it's worth paying for. My Copilot vs ChatGPT guide is a good place to start.

Do you train one-to-one?

Yes. A private session first means you can find your feet before your team is trained.

Where does the training happen?

At your office anywhere in Sussex or the Kent border, or by video. Small groups work best, so everyone gets hands-on time.

Do we need an AI policy?

It's sensible to have clear rules, and Acas recommends one. I'll help you agree practical rules for your team, starting from my free AI policy template. For anything with legal effect, such as contract terms or disciplinary procedures, speak to your HR or legal adviser.
